Using only the most basic elements of photography – light, lenses and silver nitrate – Photonic Drawings are photogram ambrotypes made on either trophy aluminum or on powder coated titanium. Made using the historic wet-plate collodion chemistry on modern substrates, the Photonic Drawings are the simplest interaction of light and lenses and sensitized metal.

Glass lenses are balanced on the collodion emulsion and exposed with a beam of light which is focused by the lenses into concentrated patterns of light and shadows on the sensitized metal. The physical contact of the lenses with the emulsion add a tactile dimension to the ethereal glossy surface of the ambrotypes. Often the lenses will fall onto the emulsion causing unplanned and unexpected “oop-arts” marks on the emulsion. Each plate is one-of-a-kind because the lenses can never be placed on the ambrotype the same as before.

The Photonic Drawings bridge the historic collodion process with the modern substrates of either trophy aluminum or the exotic powder-coated titanium. The powder-coated titanium plates are distinguished by the black coating on the back of the plate and a small hole in the corner of the plate.
