Sonoma Explorations

With a few more days on my own before Chris and Lenny would arrive, I planned a few more rides and a bit more scouting of the GF route.  On October 1 I drove to Occidental and started riding down the Bohemian Highway to the Russian River.  It was another beautiful day, but quite cool at the start.  It was a thrilling descent down the Bohemian Highway and I was glad there was light traffic.   There are no shoulders on this road.  We would be riding this in the GF with a lot of riders, but today I was solo.  I went down the Russian River to the coast and then went left on California 1, rejoining the GF route past Goat Rock.  I had ridden some of this a few years earlier when I was in CA for the Tour of the Unknown Coast we came down to the wine country for some R&R and used the opportunity to ride from Bodega Bay to the top of King Ridge and back.

Today I rode to Bodega Bay and then headed inland.  Then over to the town of Bodega where Alfred Hitchcock filmed “The Birds” and back to Occidental.  Another great ride with more super steep hills.  If you have seen “The Birds” the town of Bodega will seem very familiar.

I had a nice spaghetti lunch back in Occidental after the ride.

The next day I did an easy ride from the motel up Chalk Hill and back, just to loosen up the legs.

And on Friday, the day before the ride, I rested, visited the Charles Schultz Museum (father of the Charlie Brown comic) in Santa Rosa, and hung out to await the arrival of Chris and Lenny.
