The inspiration for the Wald Project was to capture the view when awakening from a nap under a tree. Or maybe what one might dream when napping under the tree. These pinhole pictures of the trees Wald explore how the forest stimulates the human imagination evoking emotions from fantasy to fear.

A pinhole camera is a simple camera without a lens but with a tiny aperture, a pinhole camera – effectively a light-proof box with a small hole in one side. The first known description of pinhole photography is found in the 1856 book The Stereoscope by Scottish inventor David Brewster, including the description of the idea as “a camera without lenses, and with only a pin-hole”. One older use of the term “pin-hole” in the context of optics was found in James Ferguson’s 1764 book Lectures on select subjects in mechanics, hydrostatics, pneumatics, and optics

Art Connections 5

Two prints from the “Wald” series have been selected by curator Patricia G. Selden for the Art Connections 5 exhibit at the George Segal Gallery at Montclair State University. The show will be from January 15 through February 15, 2009. The opening reception is Sunday January 19th from 2-5 p.m.
