They say that everyone complains about the weather but no-one does anything about it, well, I’m blogging about it. And shoveling. This winter in the New York region we have had more snow than I can remember. The piles of snow from shoveling and plowing and blowing are huge.
Someone else who did something about the snow was Edward R. LaChapelle. He studied snow and he photographed snow. Digging through my bookshelves, I found his book Field Guide to Snow Crystals
In my bookshelf I also found A. B. C. of Avalanche Safety
I got both of these books when I lived in Aspen Colorado and was a volunteer for Mountain Rescue Aspen. I took a course in avalanche safety and avalanche prediction. This was back in the ’70’s and ’80’s when I worked with Greg Mace to help run Mountain Rescue Aspen. I also helped Fred Braun run the hut system which he built and operated in the mountains around Aspen.
Living in the mountains of Colorado from 1975 to 1985 I did a lot of shoveling, but “it came with the territory.” Here in the Northeast this is an unusual winter, beautiful and challenging.
